WINNER Poster Session 2025: Sharing Our Journey in Driving Batik Wastewater to be More Sustainable

Representatives from Green Batik Initiative consortium at the WINNER 2025 poster session.

WINNER conference is a yearly event to promote innovations, research, and education through collaborations between Indonesia and the Netherlands. It was conducted by several institutions; Royal Netherlands Embassy in Jakarta, Nuffic, Akademi Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (AIPI), The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek in Indonesia), and National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

At the 6th annual WINNER event held this year at IPB University On October 8th 2025, under the theme ‘Building a Sustainable Future through Education and Research,’ we participated in the poster session. The recent updates on our batik wastewater treatment project in Pekalongan were discussed. The title of our session was “Sustainable Green Batik Pekalongan: Pilot Project on Wastewater.”

Our exhibition booth at WINNER 2025.

The key points we presented during the session were:

  1. Simple and affordable batik wastewater treatment technology. The treatment system is low-maintenance and uses low-cost recycled materials such as IBC tanks and shells. The implementation costs range from IDR 5–25 million per workshop.
  2. Significant early results (BOD, COD, TSS). Early results indicate strong reduction in contaminants like 48.39% TSS, 82.14% COD, and 79.67% BOD.
  3. This project follows the steps required for Green Batik and Green Industry Certification. We brought a prototype so visitors could see the batik wastewater treatment process in action. It made the difference between hearing about it and watching it work.
Pre-treatment and post-treatment batik wastewater samples.

We had visitors from all over—researchers, university students, lecturers, and small business owners. One batik entrepreneur from the Jabodetabek area stood out. She spent time asking real questions about how our wastewater treatment system actually worked.

Visitors from academia and industry saw the batik wastewater treatment system work. It’s cost-effective, it works, and it could scale to other industries—tofu processing, textiles, and the kitchens running the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.

We plan to rejoin WINNER 2026 next year with new developments in batik wastewater treatment. WINNER helped us reach people working on the same problems, and that mattered. Our sincere thanks to every partner who has contributed and supported us throughout this project.
